AFTER 820 YEARS, ST MARY’S IS STILL GOING STRONG! We love that our congregation represents the diversity of Kennington, Newington and Elephant and Castle, in terms of age, race, social background, personal circumstances, gender identity and sexuality. We welcome everyone as people made in God’s image and loved by him. Grace Not Condemnation is our message.
We are growing in spirituality, depth, and numbers as we draw more people to gather as a community in this diverse but sometimes segregated neighbourhood. We want to build up our social, pastoral, and educational work, whilst increasing opportunities for prayer, meditation, and community use of our building. We would love others to come and be part of our church. Whether you call yourself a Christian, are someone who’s uncertain and wanting to explore, or just seeking a space of beauty and peace, anyone is welcome to join us for worship or any of our other activities. We are part of the Church of England and Anglican Communion and worship in the catholic tradition (known as High Church or Anglo-Catholic)
MORE ABOUT OUR CHURCH
Close to Kennington tube, London, St Mary Newington, is part of the Church of England (Anglican Communion).
Our central aim and purpose is to worship God in Jesus Christ and to draw others into the wonder and mystery of the faith. We do this in the catholic tradition of the Church of England (also referred to as High Church). This means that our services are largely traditional, carefully executed, and filled with beautiful ceremony, such as the use of incense, which help us to celebrate God’s presence in word and sacrament and recognise the mystery and wonder at the heart of Christian faith.
However, we try to avoid being stuffy and seek to build a church that is friendly, vibrant and fun. Whether you are a committed Christian, a lapsed one, a curious seeker unsure of what you believe or you just want a screen free hour of peace and reflection on a Sunday, you will be welcomed here without judgement or reservation.
Visiting the church: we are very close to Kennington Underground Station and bus numbers 133, 155, 333 and 415 stop very nearby.
